Cannon Project – Creating Proxy Geometry in Maya

This week we are tasked to create a cannon in any style we chose. At first I wanted to do a Chinese styled cannon but after more research I like the look and detail of a late 1700s style of French cannon. Specifically a Royal French 24 - Pounder Heavy cannon. Here are some of the images I collected as reference for the size and shape of the cannon as well as some images of the environment that I will set the cannon in after I have finished the model.

I used  this schematic that Christian Rogge created off of older blueprints as a template for the general shape of my cannon. I will be adding more details to change the overall look of the cannon but this was a good way for me to know how the scale and relationship of the different parts of the cannon worked with each other.

Here are the images that Christian referenced in his blueprint:

Week 07: Digital Painting

For week 07 we were tasked to take all of the foundational skill we acquired over the first half of the semester and combine it into a final illustration.

For my references I used the images below:

I used multiple render AOVs out of arnold into Photoshop to create the images below:

Crate Sculpt to Unreal: Textures and Substance Painter

This week we were tasked to take our sculpts and low poly conversions into Substance painter and apply color that matched a particular style we used as reference.

Below is my previous collage of references I used last week:

The image I used as a color reference was this one in particular:

And for the bullet boxes I used this image as a reference for my color choices:

Here are the maps that I exported from Substance for both the crate and the bullet boxes
for UE4:

After exporting the textures from substance, I then imported  the final models into a previous unreal scene:

Finally, here are a set of renders out of the unreal level with all of the textures and normals applied:

Week 6: Perspective

This week we were tasked to create multiple buildings to practice one , two, and three point perspective.

I drew inspiration for my buildings from the images below:

I wanted to make something modular that I could easily swap windows, doors, roofs, etc.

Once all the separate pieces were made, I could start building out the different levels:

Here are the final buildings I ended up with:

Here is the one point perspective shot, I tried the toon shader with this one but ended up using standard materials for my final renders because of the softer look.

Two point:

Finally three point perspective:

Crate Sculpt Part 2

This week we took our previous crate into zbrush and sculpted in detail that we would then bake down into our lower res model. I decided to change the model to a different shaped crate. Here are a few images that I used as inspiration for the wear and tear on the crate as well as what I will be using for texture reference for next weeks assignment.

This is the scale difference of my new crate compared to the previous version:

Next I imported the crate into Zbrush

Here is the high poly sculpt.

Then I exported the file out of zbrush and back into Maya to compare to the low poly:

I am leaving space in the uv layout because I have not decided on how I want to place the ammunition box and bullets into the crate at this time.

The final step was to bake the normals in substance painter.
